Recent Studies Show Benefits of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) Supplementation.

ATP is a substance present in all living cells that provides energy for many metabolic processes. As we age, intracellular levels of ATP drop significantly.

Several published pre-clinical and human clinical trials have shown that extracellular ATP and its major degradation product, adenosine, activate specific ATP and adenosine receptors on the cells that line the blood vessel walls. This improves blood vessel tone and the widening of blood vessels resulting from relaxation of smooth muscle cells within the vessel walls thus increasing the flow of blood to the heart, brain and peripheral areas, especially to skeletal muscles. This also increases the delivery of glucose, nutrients and oxygen to working and recovering muscles and the removal of catabolic waste products. The end result of these actions is increased energy and vitality as well as improved athletic performance and recovery.

Dr. Eliezer Rapaport, one of the foremost world authorities on ATP, has been studying ATP and its effects for decades. As a result, Dr. Rapaport has been issued several unique ATP patents. TSI Health Sciences of Missoula, Montana has acquired exclusive license to several of Dr. Rapaport's patents and have produced the first ATP formulation that is effective in an orally delivered form. This product is called PEAK ATP®.

A randomized, double-blind, placebocontrolled trial, performed at the Cooper Institute Centers for Integrated Health Research, studied the effects of PEAK ATP® on 27 healthy male athletes aged 18-45. Men who took a high dose (225 mg) of the supplement daily for two weeks were able to do 18.5% more reps than before they started the treatment and total lifting volume increased by 1,552 pounds-a 28.2% gain. 1

ATP is also being studied in patients with advanced solid tumors to see if it can decrease weight loss and improve muscle strength. Preliminary data suggests that ATP may actually help terminal cancer patients "get bigger and stronger." The investigators observed that ATP seems to favorably impact lung cancer patients who have failed chemo-and/or radiation therapy by allowing them to regain their appetite and to maintain their body composition. 2

New Study Confirms Importance of Vitamin E


A three-year study of micronutrients in older adults in Italy indicates a linkage between higher blood levels of vitamin E and better performance in standardized physical tests. Results of the study were published in the January 23, 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.


The study was conducted with 698 adults with an average initial age of 73.7 years, in two towns in the Tuscany province of Italy, near Florence. Blood samples were analyzed at the start of the study and after a three-year interval for the micronutrients vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin D, vitamin E, folic acid and iron. Participants were also given a standardized physical performance test, the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB).


Participants in the study were interviewed by the research team of nutritionists and geriatric physicians from the U.S. and Italy to determine their diets and estimate their micronutrient intake. No dietary supplements were given to participants of the study.


After three years, participants were re-tested for micronutrients and physical performance. Only two factors were linked statistically with lower scores on the SPPB—age and lower serum concentration of vitamin E.


The SPPB includes three tests—the best of two attempts at walking four meters distance, five repeated chair rises with hands folded across the chest, and standing balance attempts in progressively challenging positions. The SPPB score is considered a reliable and sensitive indicator of clinically important physical changes in adults.


The research team, led by nutritionists and physicians from Cornell and Yale University, concluded that clinical trials may be useful to determine if there is a baseline serum vitamin E concentration for reducing functional decline in older adults.


Because the study did not involve vitamin supplements, there are no recommendations for increasing vitamin E intake in the report. The results may encourage adults to ensure their diets include enough whole grains, nuts, leafy green vegetables or supplements to sustain their vitamin E levels.

Improve Your Health with Antioxidant Supplements


Antioxidants are among the most important substances that should be present in your body at all times. These substances are essential in helping your body fight harmful free radicals. Many different kinds of foods are rich in antioxidants but you can also get your daily supply from antioxidant supplements.

An adequate amount of antioxidants in the body will keep you well-protected against cell damage and infection, which is mostly caused by the free radicals released by your own body. Most people do have sufficient levels of antioxidants. However, those who suffer from certain vitamin deficiencies may not have enough antioxidants in their body to protect themselves from the damaging effects of free radicals. Most antioxidant supplements come in the form of herbal or organic tablets. In supplementation, as in diet, it is important to acquire antioxidants from a variety of sources. There are several reactive oxygen molecules produced in cells . These include hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorous acid, and free radicals such as hydroxyl radical and the superoxide anion. There are two divisions of antioxidants, those soluble in water (Vitamin C, Lipoic acid, etc.) and those soluble in lipids (Vitamin E, Carotenes, Coenzyme Q, etc.). Water soluble antioxidants interact with oxidants in the cell cytosol (intracellular fluid) and blood plasma. Lipid soluble antioxidants protect cell membranes from damage caused by lipid peroxidation. With the interdependent and synergistic effects various metabolites and enzyme systems have on one another, the effectiveness of one antioxidant may depend on the function of other antioxidants in the system. The effectiveness of any one antioxidant not only depends on its concentration but, also on its reactivity towards the particular type of reactive oxygen molecule being considered.

Besides taking antioxidant supplements, eating foods that are rich in antioxidants can help reduce your body's susceptibility to illnesses and infections. These foods include leafy green vegetables, most fruits and whole grain products. For example, Vitamin C and Caroteniods are found in fruits and vegetables. Vitamin E (tocopherols, tocotrienols) can be obtained from vegetable oils. And polyphenolic antioxidants can be found in tea, soy, grapes, berries, olive oil, cinnamon, oregano and red wine. If you eat adequate quantities of these foods on a daily basis, you can be sure your body will have the necessary antioxidants to fight the free radicals and other harmful chemicals that might find their way into your system. However, if you think your regular diet does not provide you with sufficient amounts of antioxidants, consider taking some antioxidant supplements to boost your body's defenses.
